Come sarebbe oggi l’Italia se non si fosse mai unita? L’autore ci descrive questo ipotetico scenario attraverso gli occhi di Sandro Appiani, un insegnante napoletano che è costretto ad emigrare nella provincia più a sud del ricco Impero d’Austria, ossia la Toscana.
Il protagonista si muove tra l’intolleranza, di cui spesso è vittima, e l’ipocrisia che domina il mondo nuovo in cui è costretto a vivere per necessità.
Dello sfortunato sud Italia i settentrionali sembrano infatti apprezzare soltanto i canditi ed il caffè, d’altro canto chiudono volentieri un occhio nei confronti dei numerosi malavitosi russi che vengono a passare le vacanze, con le loro stravaganti megalomanie, sulle coste toscane.
Il romanzo, ironico e delicato allo stesso tempo, propone una rilettura divertente dei difetti del nostro paese, rilettura che, calata in un ambiente surreale, non chiude mai la porta al buon umore e alla speranza.

Of all things coming from the unlucky South of Italy, the northerners seem to appreciate just candies and coffee. On the other hand, they willingly turn a blind eye on several eccentric megalomaniac Russian criminals coming on holiday to the Tuscan coast.
The novel, ironical and delicate at once, offers a new amusing vision of Italy’s faults. This vision is set in a surreal background and never shuts the door to good mood and hope.
