In the centenary of the publication of Le avventure di Pinocchio (1883-1983), the Carlo Collodi Foundation in Pescia promoted and edited an exemplary and historic edition of the masterpiece by Lorenzini, which was dedicated to the memory of Rolando Anzillotti, creator, founder and first president of the Foundation and illustrated by Sigfrido Bartolini. He realized, along twelve years and with an effort equal to his creative passion, 309 original xylographies, (most of them on wood of cherry, as well as maple, box, olive and exotic woods) and 73 linoleums in tree colours out of the text, as well as personally editing the layout of the volume. Only 220 numbered copies with autograph signature of the artist, and some others out of commerce countermarked with Roman numbers, were pressed directly from Bartolini’s woods on Magnani paper, expressively created on special watermark. Each copy contained a detached plate in two colours, dry stamped, numbered and signed with a pencil by the artist. The text was composed with Goudy characters expressively fused in monotype: composition and printing were supervised personally by Bartolini. When the printing was completed both the woods and the linoleums were crossed out so that they could not be used any longer; today they are conserved in the National Foundation «Carlo Collodi» in Pescia. In the same occasion was also realized a offset printing of the Pinocchio illustrated by Bartolini, sold out and printed again in 1996.
In November 2007 was realized the present anastatic edition, - the third of the series, which faithfully reproduces the others- intended as the possibility of appreciating the artistic work of Sigfrido Bartolini by the large public.
