Onofrio Pepe

Onofrio Pepe, born in Nocera Inferiore (Salerno) in 1945, graduated at Istituto d’arte of Salerno, for several years he has been lived and worked in Florence. From Paestum and Pompei, places where is tangible the myhts timeless modernity, Pepe transfers his suggestions in sculpture, art to which he approached as self-taught. The encounter with the sculpture, of which he becomes one of the italian protagonists, happened in Florence, in one of the few artist studies remains in the old town center, in the San Frediano district. Pepe improves his formal expression through the ancient sculpture that releases him from the imposed attitudes of th Baroque representation: his research about myth, inexhaustible source of themes and topics, pursued for decades, carries him in a symbolic universe to honor. He achieved important personal exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and his monumental sculptures are located into prestigious public spaces. In 1998, the Region of Tuscany commissioned from him the “Pegaso d’Oro” awarded to Jerzy Grotowski; in 2000 at Vivarelli-Colonna palace, the Municipality of Florence has promoted an exhibition of his sculptures, intitled “Il volo di Icaro”.
