Via della Cina (in English, China Street) is what the Chinese community calls Chinatown in Prato. Here lives Lucia, the protagonist of the novel.
Lucia is a Chinese girl working in Prato. She arrives in Italy after a very long journey at the expense of mortgaging her house. She is obliged to face a hard life due to the great amount of hours spent working without rest in a factory, until she meets a man who promises her a bright future thanks to the help of guanxi, a solid network of friend and family relationships upon which Chinese society is based. They get married, but he is a gambler and turns out to be a violent husband...
Lucia’s story is the same as many other Eastern immigrants’, people who count for nothing, even within their own community, and are bullied by their own richer and unscrupulous fellow countrymen. A story made up of suffering and resignation, as well as anger and rebellion. An opportunity to understand better a culture with which we hardly interact.
