Catalogo dell’esposizione Maiolica medievale. Una moderna interpretazione tenutasi presso il Palazzo Casali di Cortona (Arezzo) dal 4 agosto al 4 ottobre del 2006. Catalog of the exhibition Maiolica medievale. Una moderna interpretazione (Medieval Majolica. A Modern Interpretation) held by Palazzo Casali di Cortona (Arezzo) from August 4th to October 4th, 2006. The exhibition has planned the presentation of roughly 30 archaic majolica masterworks from Umbria and Lazio, dating back to the 10th through 14th centuries These pieces are influenced on one hand by the extraordinary figurative tradition of the etruscans, and on the other hand by the fantastic world of the medieval bestiary. Among these ancient artworks you will also find many examples of contemporary ceramics (loosely inspired by the historical ones) created by Christopher Robinson, docent of the Studies Abroad Program; they were made in the ceramics laboratory of the Cortona branch of the University of Georgia. This small exhibition, born from a collaboration between the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Polo Museale Romano, the Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca, the city of Cortona and the University of Georgia in Cortona, represents a larger project mission of the administration of the Museo Nazionale del Palazzo di Venezia: to spread and promote knowledge and practice of the ancient art of ceramics, reinforcing the existing relationship between its historical collections and the numerous current workshops for handmade ceramics. The catolog provides an informative note on the dimensions, origins, time period, and general characteristics of each piece, accompanied by a photograph; all texts are also translated into English.
